Millets Mission Update | February 19, 2018
Government of Odisha has launched special programme for promotion of millets in tribal areas. One of the important components of the programme is to promote consumption of millets in rural and urban areas. In order to increase the awareness among the urban populace of the city, a Millet Urban Internship programme was launched by the State Secretariat under the project.

He said that many times policy suggestions may not become concrete schemes very soon. He congratulated NCDS on the role it played in transforming public policy discourse on millet into action oriented programme. He referred to his climate change chapter in the economic survey and also said Millet Mission Odisha is good model in this regard.

 

 

System of Millet Intensification (SMI) Farmers from Nuapada, Odisha

Venue: Kharamal village, Bargarh distrct, Odisha | December 7, 2017

A Seed Diversity Festival was conducted on 7th December 2017 by Ahinsa club partnering with WOFRI, MINI, Desi Bihan Suraksha Manch at Kharamal village of Bargarh District of Odisha and felicitated by Member of Parliament. As many as 160 varieties of Paddy seeds, 20 varieties of Finger Millet and vegetable seeds were on display in different stalls at the seed fair..

 

 

Orientation of Anganwadis workers & Women SHGs on the importance of millets by Women & Child Department and Millet Mission Odisha

Venue: Collectorate Conference Hall, Nuapada, Odisha | November 6, 2017

Orientation programme on importance of including millets in state nutrition programmes such as ICDS, ST SC Hostels was organised by DSWO Nuapada & ATMA Nuapada & Ahinsa Club. 35 participants from AWCs, women SHG groups participated from Komana Block. Collector & District Magistrate Ms Poma Tudu IAS participated in the session and encouraged AWCs to spread the message about millets. In the programme, Ms Nibedita Nayak DSWO shared about nutritional aspects of millets in detail. Programme generated huge enthusiasm among the AWC workers. They are looking forward to inter state exposure visit to study and understand process of inclusion of millets in ICDS.

Government of Odisha to form working group to document the indigenous seeds in Millet Mission Programme

Dr Sarat Babu, Principal Scientist, Regional Centre, Hyderabad National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) gave a presentation to the committee headed by Dr Saurabh Garg, Principal Secretary, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Empowerment (D.A.F.E), Odisha on the Convention of Bio Diversity (CBD) agreement. This meeting was attended by Mr Hari Bhallav Mishra IAS, Director, Directorate of Agriculture & Food production, Odisha and Mr Sanjay Pani, Nodal Officer NFSM Cell and other department officials. He stressed the need to the conserve and document the plant genetic material of millets and pulses indigenous to these regions.

 

Farmer perspectives on Sustainable Agriculture Programmes funded by Government

The session started with a welcome address by Ms Sabarmatee, SAMBHAV at 10:30 am. She invited the Dr Srijit Mishra, Director, NCDS and Mr Sailen Routray, CSHB to be moderators of the session. Session focussed on farmer perspectives on the policy interventions by the Government namely Paramparaghat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), Mahila Kisan Sasaktikaran Pariyojana (MKSP) and Special Programme for Promotion of Millets in Tribal Areas (Millet Mission Odisha). Farmer representatives from Sundergarh, Rayagada and Koraput participated in the discussion are following..

KBK administrator visited SMI plots, interact with marginal farmers and facing his deeply interest towards Millet promotion through cultivation, storage, processing and consumption at every house hold level with collective meeting with SHG members, farmers, and all govt. Line Dept. Officials at Komana Block, Nuapada District @Ahinsha club in association with Millet Mission, Nuapada and WASSAN. Followed by the visit, as per the schedule, a review and inter departmental convergence meeting was held under chairmanship of KBK Administrator cum ACS and Ms Poma Tudu IAS, Collector & District Magistrate Nuapada. The progress of Millet Mission was reviewed. Mr Dinesh Balam, State Coordinator, WASSAN presented the need and strategy for inclusion of millets in SNPs. A brainstorming session was conducted on the various constraints and possible ways in which Millets can be included in the SNPs such as ICDS, ST Welfare Hostels, etc

 

One-Day district level training on Pest Management and Organic Manure Preparation Methods

One Day District Level Training Programme on Pest Management& Organic Manure Preparation was successfullyorganized by the Programme Secretariat (WASSAN). The purpose of the training programme was to make the Project Coordinator and CRPs efficient enough in pest management and organic manure preparation methods.

 

Millet Fair - Exhibition on Millets

Venue: ATMA, Koraput | September 27 and 30, 2017

A four day exhibition on Millet was conducted by the ATMA, Koraputin collaboration with WASSAN onthe occasion of Durgapuja from date 27.9.17 to 30.9.17 at Jeypore New Bustand. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Deputy Director of Agriculture, Koraput (Jeypore), Mr. Kalidash Biswas officially in the evening along with other officials. There werearound ten stalls opened for the display of different Agricultural equipment, seedlings of various plants, along with the three Millet Value added productsstalls. Themain objective of the exhibition wasto spread the knowledge of various nutritional values of the Milletssuch as- Suan, Kangu, Mandia, Kodo, Jana and these millets are available in the district however some of them are declining through the years.In this exhibition 42 different types of millets were displayed.

 

Three days Residential Training on Pest Management and Organic Manure Preparation Methods

Venue: Sambhav, Rohibanka Nayagarh | September 22-24, 2017

A three days training programme on the above theme had been organized by WASSAN at SAMBHAV, Rohibanka, Nayagarh. The participants from Agriculture Department, Kandhamal,allDistrict Project Coordinatorsof WASSAN, and Coordinatorsfrom Facilitating Agencies & Community Resource Persons (CRPs) from Kandhamal, Nuapada and Kalahandihad attended the program.

 

Two days Residential Training - cum - Exposure Programme on System of Millet Intensification

Venue: Jagruti Training Hall, Daringbadi, Kandhamal | August 18 and 19, 2017

Two Days Residential Training Programme on System of Millet Intensification was organized on 18th and 19th August, 2017 at Jagruti Training Hall, Daringbadi, Kandhamal. The purpose of the Training-cum-Exposure programme was to give practical experience to the Raikia Block Project Coordinators, Community Resource Persons, Progressive Farmers and healthy exchange of knowledge on local agronomic practices for better yield in both block Raikia and daringbadi. There were 47 participants present in this program such as, Block Project Coordinators, CRPs, Assistant Agriculture Officer, Agriculture Overseer, Executive Secretary of Jagruti, District Coordinator of WASSAN and Resource Person from WASSAN.

A two day reflection workshop on “Special Programme for Promotion of Millets in the Tribal district of Odisha” was organized by the Programme Secretariat, WASSAN and State Secretariat, NCDS on 10th and 11th of August 2017.

 

 

Millet Fair - District Level Agriculture Products Fair in Kandhamal district of Odisha

July 5 and 6, 2017

A District level agriculture products fair conducted in the Kandhamal District by ATMA on 5th & 6th July 2017. Mr DamodarRaut, Minister of Agriculture, Government of Odisha was the chief guest at this event. Event was also attended by Collector & District Magistrate, Deputy Director Agriculture, Deputy Director Horticulture, Chief District Veterinary Officer. This event was also attended by many farmers and department officials. A total of 2000 people attended the event. This fair was conducted to sensitive farmers about the latest technology in agriculture production.

 

Millet Fair - Occasion of RathYatra in Kandhamal district of Odisha

Kandhamal is one of the millet districts in Odisha among the seven millet districts. On theauspicious day of RathYatra (dated. 24th June 2017), Dr Brunda D, Collector & District Magistrate, Kandhamal District inaugurated the Special programme for promotion of millets in tribal areas for Kandhamal District. This programme was attended by the district officials from agriculture department, horticulture department, NABARD, Panchayati Raj Department.

WASSAN in assistance of Agriculture Department Gajapati had organized a Training Program on “Training on SMI for Special Programme for Promotion of Millet in Tribal Areas” at SACAL Training Hall, Sukhila Amba, Mohana Block of Gajapati District on 22nd June 2017. The AAO, AO, VAW, FA Coordinators and farmers from Rayagada, R. Udayagiri and Mohana Block attended the program. At the outset the Project Coordinator, WASSAN welcomed all the participants and a quick introduction was carried out among the participants.

One day training Programme on System of Millets Intensification (SMI) was organized on 20th June 2017 at FIAC Training Hall, Kotagarh, Kandhamal. The purpose of the training programme was to train the Project Coordinators (FAs), the Community Resource Persons (CRPs), as well as Progressive farmers on advanced agronomic practices in order increase the production of Millets. There were 40 participants present in training programme such as Deputy Director of Agriculture, Deputy Project Director of ATMA, Dry Land Scientist, Assistant Agriculture Officers of Kandhamal, Project Coordinators and CRPs of Facilitating Agencies (FAs) and progressive farmers of the millet mission operating blocks, State and District Coordinators of Wassan and Research officer of NCDS.

 

One Day Training Programme on System of Millet Intensification

Venue: OPDSC Training Hall, Rayagada | June 19, 2017

One day training programme on system of millet intensification training was organized on 19th June 2017 at OPDSC Training Hall, Rayagada. In this programme Block Agriculture officer of Rayagada, 15 farmers, 13 CRPs, 5 coordinators and four secretaries of NGOs of two districts Rayagada and Kalahandi were participated. Five FA NGO are ASHA (Gunupur), OPDSC (Rayagada), Jagaran (Gudari), SVA (Narla) and JanaSahajya (Langigad). The main objective of the training is to introduce SMI system on millet to enhance productivity in the tribal area of Odisha and to increase the capacities of CRPs on best agronomy practices to enhance millets productivity.

One day training Programme on System of Millets Intensification (SMI) was organized on 12th June 2017 at Pragati Training Hall, Koraput. The purpose of the training programme was to train the Project Coordinators (FAs) as well as the Community Resource Persons (CRPs) on advanced agronomic practices in order increase the production of millets. There were 48 participants present in training programme such as Assistant Agriculture Officers of Koraput, Project Coordinators and CRPs of Facilitating Agencies (FAs) from Malkangiri and Koraput, State and District Coordinators of Wassan and Research officer of NCDS.

An inception cum orientation workshop for District level agriculture officers of 7 districts namely Gajapati, Kalahandi, Koraput, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Nuapada and Rayagada at Sadabhabana Gruha, Koraput on 3rd March and 4th March 2017. This workshop was organised by ATMA Koraput. It was facilitated by Programme Secretariat (WASSAN) and State Secretariat (NCDS)..

 

One day Consultation on Revival of Millets in Southern Odisha with Government of Odisha
Venue: NCDS, Bhubaneswar, Odisha | January 27th, 2016
A preliminary discussion took place between Dr Srijit Mishra (Director, Nabakrushna Choudhury Centre For Development Studies (NCDS), RRA Network, ASHA Network and Living Farms on revival of millets in month of December 2015. A note on revival of millets was developed. Dr Srijit Mishra shared the note and had discussions on revival of millets with Shri R Balakrishanan, Development Commissioner cum Additional chief Secretary, Planning & Co-ordination Department , Govt of Odisha and Shri Manoj Ahuja, Principal Secretary , Department of Agriculture, Govt of Odisha. Based on these discussions, Development Commissioner and Nabakrushna Choudhury Centre For Development Studies (NCDS) organized one day consultation on “Revival of Millets for Securing Nutrition and Mitigating Drought Spells in Southern Odisha” in collaboration with RRA Network and ASHA Network on 27th January 2016. Objective of the consultation was to evolve a program framework for reviving millets in farms and in consumption in southern Odisha based on the experiences of grassroots organizations and similar programs in other states.

 

 

Launching of Millet Mission and Integrated Farming Programme by Development Commissioner cum Additional Chief Secretary for Malkangiri district in Odisha

“Special Programme for promotion of Integrated Farming in Tribal Areas” and “Special Programme for promotion of millets in Tribal Areas” for Malkangiri District was launched by Shri R Balakrishnan IAS, Development Commissioner cum Additional Chief Secretary (DC cum ACS), Govt. of Odisha 0n 19th April 2017 at DRDA Office in Malkangiri. Launching event was presided by Shri Manoj Ahuja IAS, Principal Secretary, unnamed (1)Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment Department, Government of Odisha and also attended by Shri G. Mathi Vathanan IAS, Commissioner cum Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Dept, Shri Manas Madakami, MLA Malkangiri, Shri K Sudharshan Chakravarthy IAS, Collector & District Magistrate and Shri Damodar Sethi, Deputy Director, Agriculture, Malkangiri District.

 

 

One day Consultation on “Evolving Program Modalities for Comprehensive Revival of Millets Program of Government of Odisha“

Venue: NCDS, Bhubaneswar, Odisha | March 29, 2016

Following up on workshop organised by NCDS, RRA and ASHA Networks on 27th January 2016 on “Comprehensive Revival of Millets”, Government of Odisha led to the Finance Minister announced a “Comprehensive Program on Revival of Millets” in the state. One of the major break through is that the Department of Agriculture is considering opening up partnership with civil society working as Facilitating Agencies. RRA Network, ASHA Network in collaboration with Nabakrushna Chaudhary Centre For Development Studies (NCDS) organized one day consultation on “Evolving Program Modalities for Revival of Millets Program of Government of Odisha”. Objective of the consultation was to evolve program modalities for comprehensive reviving millets program of government of Odisha. Consultation workshop was chaired by Dr Srijit Mishra, Director, NCDS and Professor Radha Mohan of SAMBHAV. Session was facilitated by Dr Sabyasachi Das, RRA Network and Debjeet Sarangi, ASHA Network. A total of participants representing civil society, government departments and programs participated.
